Missouri-conceived Jane Darwell was conceived Patti Woodard, the girl of William Robert Woodard, leader of the Louisville Southern Railroad, and Ellen (Booth) Woodard, in Palmyra, Missouri, where she experienced childhood with a farm . She breast fed desires to be a show vocalist, yet put it off due to her dad's dissatisfaction (she at last changed her name to Darwell from the family name of Woodard so as not to "soil" the family name). Making her stage debut at age 33, she was right around 40 when she made her first film, a quiet, in 1913.


She effortlessly made the change from silents to talkies, and spent significant time in playing benevolent, grandmotherly types. Her most renowned job was as Ma Joad, the paste that kept the Joad family intact, in the exemplary The Grapes of Wrath (1940), for which she won the Academy Award. She was, nonetheless, significantly cast against type in The Ox-Bow Incident (1942), as the peevish, snickering Ma Grier, a lynch crowd pioneer, and again in Caged (1950), as the unsympathetic jail lady accountable for the disconnection ward.


She made more than 200 movies. Her last, Mary Poppins (1964), was made at the express solicitation of Walt Disney; she had resigned and was residing at the Motion Picture Country Home and Disney came out by and by to request that she show up in the film, after which she returned into retirement.
